This project is really for probably you to employ in two circumstances. One is if your rod rest breaks and you want to go fishing before you have time to get to the shop for another one,or two,if you're a bit skint and need a rest for little or no outlay.Either way,for this you'll need a few feet of galvanised fence wire of the type that normal 4 or 5 wire fences are made of,and three lengths of piping at whatever length you fancy,3 feet,4 feet,5 feet, whatever. In this example I'm using 22mm copper pipe, and I've cut only 1 foot lengths to make it easier to photograph.

Firstly, take three pieces of wire, two around 14 inches, and 1 around 24 inches. There's no exact measurement for these, just experiment and use what you've got.

Bend them in the shape shown in the second picture, using the larger piece for the top part which will eventually be the part your rods sit on.

Using a vice and pliers, twist them together as shown in the third picture. This takes a bit of elbow grease by the way.

Now bend the twisted parts down to make a sort of wire tripod, then slip them into the three lengths of pipe.

Now take three pieces of wood around 2 or 3 inches, whittle them to fit inside the pipe that you are using with a little to spare, and bang them into the pipes alongside the wires,to lock the wires in place.

You will now have a basic tripod rest. There is plenty of give in the galvanised wire to open and close the legs, and they stand many hundreds of openings and shuttings before they give out.

It's not perfect, but it works,it's free, and it takes about 20 minutes. To fancy it up a bit, tape over the exposed wire to soften it,and spary paint the legs.
