This knot is the one first knot that I learned to tie when I was a kid after the ordinary reef knot. The old style spade ended hooks that we used to use required the use of this knot, but now I find it very useful for tying circle hooks especially as it seems to tip the hook nicely into position when the fish takes the bait.

Firstly just make a loop down the shank of the hook with the line.

Now take the tag end and make a series of turns down the hook shank trying to keep it all as neat and tight as possible.

Then pass the tag end through the loop that you created.

Lubricate with spit and pull the main line so that the loop tightens down on the protruding tag end, then fully tighten.
