The term 'Cocktail' just means to combine 2 or more types of bait together to form the one bait. You can really mix absolutely anything you have in any combination you fancy, but probably the most common thing to do is to use a base bait like mackerel or squid, and combine that with something more juicy like lugworm or crab. These are also the easiest to do as you just bait up your mackerel or squid in the normal way,and then lash some different bait alongside it with elastic.

You can also pre-prepare bait in this way which can be handy in winter.I often make a load of squid and mackerel cocktails and freeze them for use in winter.

To do this you need a squid and a bit of mackerel.

Lash them together with bait elastic.

At this stage, either freeze for later use,or take your pennel set up and hook through the bait near the bottom with the bottom hook.

Make your twists around the top hook shank, and pass that hook through the top of the bait.

Now whip the whole thing with elastic to pull it all together.
