This is a good one for those windy times when you're fishing on a pier with a railing.Your rod rest keeps blowing over and the rod keeps scooting along the metal rail.Nip down to the shop and buy a pack of these anti-finger squashing door closing preventers for kids.I got this pack of 2 for 99p.

Bore a couple of holes in the sides of the rubber finger protector and screw it to a peice of wood around 5 inches by 1 inch.

Take a couple of strips of velcro, the kind with the hooks on one side and the eyes on the other,or two strips of elastic. If you use elastic you'll need to fit a hook and eye to the wood and the elastic so that when you wrap the elastic around the rail, you can hook it up to stop it unfurling.

Now any amount of wind won't disturb your rod,and the rubber will stop any scratching on the underside too.In this picture I've got a longer piece of wood with two finger protectors which of course takes two rods. And aa an added bonus you don't have to carry a rod rest with you and the rail rest is small and light to fit in your tackle box.
